Admin abuse: straith :: Oct 24, 2008 @ 8:56pm
blacklingo Joined: Jan 28, 2007 Posts: 8 Location: Victoria	In several games between, straith, greg (a new player), and I, i got a pretty clear picture of straith as an admin. Greg was not playing well, but well beyond what I see from most new players. He was making for the most part intelligent decisions. One game, straith and another player were fighting and straith won over, he was much larger in production but weakened. When it seemed that greg was about to overtake him (and greg would have) straith kicked him for suiciding. The next game greg made a slight error in attacking straith again, it was not a wise move, but not a game-altering one either. Greg wa kicked again. And so it went, greg was kicked time after time and straith wouldn't even tell him what he did wrong. I chastised straith and told him that greg was new and that he hadn't really done much wrong but straith merely replied that he would kick any suiciding he saw without restraint and would not budge. He also referred me to the forums, where I read nanno's very helpful guide to being an admin and found that greg had indeed not suicided at all by her definition. I do wonder why he has been made an admin, as he seems to not properly represent goodwill and the nature of the game and I would like to call that decision into question. reply

I'll talk to him and see what's up. He is an excellent player and is usually a nice guy, but he's rather hot-headed. He wouldn't be my choice for admin, but there's not much we can do about other people's servers. Hopefully he'll settle down. I don't like it when people (especially admins) scare off new players. It keeps the game from growing! reply

Vince is right, it IS just recommended, not enforced. However, I don't want to recommend anyone who is troublesome. I also never put anyone on the list unless I know them personally or have good recommendations from someone I trust. I don't care if people admin people I don't know--I mean, I don't play that often any more so I can't really know what's going on (which is why the list is rather outdated at this point). As far as Timesink goes, this is the first time in the almost 2 years he's been an admin that anyone has complained about him. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but I won't take him off the list unless he causes more problems. Anyone can have a bad night. Timesink: I don't know if you read the forums, but in case you do, this is for you: Sober up and play nice or I'll clobber you for sure! And you know I will, too! reply

tinny Joined: Jan 2, 2008 Posts: 21	First off, Straith (would) makes an excellent admin. Through much experience he understands how the game works and knows what makes a game fun. He is very reasonable in his decisions and settles matters fairly. I enjoy playing with Straith very much. Secondly, Timesink is a girl. A very responsible, sweet, down-to-earth girl (unlike ham). She brings a cheer to the heart of me and many others. Her response to supersniper's out-of-the-ordinary actions that day was considered by me and our fellow Galconians to be reasonable and did not fall into the gray pit of "admin abuse". And finally, I have been playing Galcon for a number of years and during these years many terrible blunderous games have unfolded in this great universe of Galcon. It is a shame. When I last signed in to galcon I joined the ever-present xork server, excited to see 11 hungry free-for-all opponents. I was destroyed within the first 15 seconds. The menace of the enemy next to me and his immediate wave of attacks beat down on me hard, (you have probably experienced this type of attack before) however, i knew he could not defeat me, at least not on his own considering neither of us had captured any other planet. Then in one clean swoop, like a spear through the belly of two exposed men, we were both eliminated by one of the 10 other predators. This type of attack and other similar attacks, is the fail point of all new recruits to Galcon and is the exact moment when the throat of fun is sliced open spraying a thick stream of disappointment in the face of a gg. Sometimes it is difficult to tell how things will go. Sometimes imagination, especially if you are under attack, makes things out far worse than they are. Often it is blatantly obvious, but only to the experienced war-hardened mind. Everyone has the right to enjoy Galcon. The question is: should admins kick those learning-impaired students of Galcon who cast aside the advice of the experienced and who repeatedly transform the beautiful struggle of an interstellar battle of timing, speed, and strategy into a hopeless fountain of chance bubbling the luke-warm blood of a slaughtered goat? Like you and bmvj, he's way too hot-headed and apt to run his mouth. That's just how some players are, and while I think it can add an element of fun to the game, I don't want people with those particular qualities to be in a position of power on my server. What other people decide to do on their servers is their business. And Supersniper is right... Timesink is a guy. Help me out here all you old-timers... Wasn't it Duckandcover who started the rumor that Timesink was a girl? And then Timesink and Solomon ran with it? Everyone else has run with it since, and I find it highly amusing. reply

AND he/she is always going afk... nearly every time I see him/her he/she goes afk after a game or two. Short attention span. PS: I'm working on my "Hot-headed"-ness Nano. Vince took my admin away on his server because of my "attitude". That was a little wake up call. didn't realize I had gotten so bad. reply

Or Solomon or Timesink for that matter. =P However, I do know that no matter what he says, Timesink is a guy. He's just in denial sometimes. He says he banned you because you were boasting about how you got Hellish48 banished. I hope you would never do something like that! We don't like to banish people, and Hellish48 was only the 2nd one we've had to permanently cast out in 2 years. It takes alot more than just your say-so, believe me! Hellish48 had this coming for a LOOOOONG time, and that just happened to be the night. Don't take credit please. It's not something to be proud of anyway. I hope you and Timesink can get over your differences. Hellish48 isn't someone worth arguing about anyway. reply

If you don't have control over the servers, why did you ban him? WHY did we ban him? Aside from the obvious, it's not really your business, and actually has more to do with another of Phil's games than Galcon. But because of the culmination of a number of "issues" he's been permanently banned from all of Phil's games and website. And while we do not control who is admin one whose servers, we do like to exercise some control over the conduct carried out in all of them. Agreement to our social contract is required before purchasing the game, and if it gets violated enough by anyone (no matter whose server), we take issue with that. We want Galcon to be a fun, friendly game for anyone to play. That can't happen if people refuse to act civilized. If you really want to know our philosophy regarding our games, you can read my very long post called "The Admin Code of Conduct". It's not necessarily just for admins. reply

An increase in noobs gives a decrease in fun and an increase in frustration and disappointment which then leads to unfriendliness. I hope my visual aid helps you understand why such "abuse" of admin powers is necessary sometimes. reply

I'm so glad he was but sad at the same time. Maybe you didn't know just how bad he was.
