I made a very simple little change to the Symmetry mod so that whenever a planet is taken over, it loses 10 production. This means a protracted battle over a planet with several exchanges can reduce it to nothing. Strategically, it lends a bit more value to defence, but also encourages attacks on enemy planets even if you can't hold them - at least you will have reduced their production.

I've played large bot-vs-bot games of this and at the end the screen is full of 0 production planets.
