The number of wins and losses in Galcon is to some extent a zero sum game.  I've been wondering, has anyone thought about how this balances out in the long run?  For the top players (admirals) to maintain a high win percentage they have to play against weaker players.  Also the regular influx of newbies contributes to this.

Therefore, if the good players only played against each other and caught up to a similar skill level, then if the Law of Averages applies, everyone's win percentage eventually approach 50%.  Therefore high win percentages are contingent to some extent on the existence of poor players or players who "spoil" the game.  Of course, strategy (and getting other people to do things that will ultimately help you) is a big deal too. :)

I guess this basically means that as the player base becomes more mature, high win percentages should be harder to achieve.  Of course, some people will always kick butt, and I'm sure they know who they are.

In the long run, once the newbie pool dries up, we'd expect half the players to have win percentages over 50%.  Currently about two-thirds of experienced players have percentages over 50% (looking at net ranks, two-thirds of the players with over 2500 points are admirals).  So the weakest third of admirals have positions which are being held up by the newbie influx.
