I can't stress this enough...don't send more ships than you need to take the planets you want!  This is important to keep in mind at all times, but at the end of the game when it is down to 2 players it is CRITICAL!

Lately I have seen lots of instances where a new player winds up at the end of the game having excellent planets and loads of ships but no idea what to do with them.  The enemy is out of ships but controls most of the map.  Then the fatal mistake happens: the new player sends all their ships to one spot, abandoning their excellent position, then proceeds to bounce this massive fleet uselessly from one planet to another.  This gives all the production to the enemy, easily handing him a game that should have been yours!

Here's what to do: send only as many ships as you need to take an area.  In the situation described above your enemy is desperate and sending 100% of his ships at you.  You can conquer his entire production with just a few ships while not sacrificing your own position.  Send only a couple hundred ships at his empty planets and concentrate on taking the big ones in each area.  Do this quickly all over the map in different areas.  Now you have most of the map while your enemy has exhausted himself on your heavily armed planets.

When it is down to the last 2 players it is NEVER a good idea to consolidate your fleet onto one or two planets.  I repeat NEVER.  "Spread out" does not mean you should send your whole fleet galavanting across the galaxy to a single destination.  It means you should send just a few ships to every part of the map.  It's kind of like spreading the peanut butter on your sandwich.  You want to cover the bread with an even layer, not put one huge blob in some random corner.
