First, learn your enemy. Most experienced players use 100% most of the time, but some do not. There are a few players notorious for using a very low percentage. Study the players--before long you'll know who lets you pick up planets cheap and who doesn't. New players tend to stick to 50% (often they have not figured out how to change this). When in doubt, I usually assume that an experienced player is using 100% and a new player is using 50%.
But if you don't know the players already there are things to look for. During a fight, see how long it takes for ships to take a planet. If the planet changes right away, it was empty and the person who sent from that planet sent 100%. If it takes a little while then the person who sent used a lower percentage. If it's taking forever for enemy ships to eat through someone's planet field that they just "evacuated", then you know that person is definitely using a low %.
Another way to tell is to watch them send ships multiple times. If the number of ships sent is huge and then small, they are sending 100% or thereabouts. If the ships come out in fairly equal small groups, they are using a low percent. If the first spurt is high, then next about half, the next about half again, etc., then they are sending around 50% give or take. By the way, this is a good way to deceive your enemies. If you have a large fleet you can send 50% or so, then send 5% to make it look like you are sending your whole fleet when you're not. Be careful though! You don't want to tempt people to attack your "empty" planets and uncover your ruse (unless the plan is to get them to suicide on your well-defended planets).
I hope that is helpful to those of you who have asked. I'd love it if any of the experienced players have anything more to add. | | Re: Figuring out enemy % :: Jan 29, 2008 @ 9:06am |

As some will know, one of my most used stratagems is to stealthily turtle and appear to be relatively depleted of forces.
I have found recently that one very effective way of achieving this is to confuse others of the distribution of my fleet, i do this by appearing to randomly move fleets about... seemingly pointlessly, and at the same time switching between percentages... only slightly for the purpose of gradually moving the bulk of my forces to one planet before any conflict... If done right, there are just too any fleets floating around to keep track of quantities, and most of the time fleets mask other fleets landing.
then when attacked i appear to be using my full force (even though I'm leaving out one planet) and my inevitable retreat to my planet containing my forces will appear desperate and of little threat... the one problem is that you don't want to appear to depleted so that the player you are in conflict with tries to finish you off... otherwise they will likely realize your full force.
Now I guess i will have to think of another strategy :Ppost updated on Mar 21, 2008 @ 7:25pm | | Re: Figuring out enemy % :: Mar 22, 2008 @ 8:52am |
