Ok standoffs have their place, but I still hate them. :: Apr 29, 2007 @ 11:45am

I've always said how much I hate standoffs, many people know it. In fact, i'll usually end them first, often to my own doom.... that's probably why this scheme worked. Through constant talking and keeping people interested in the chat box, I was able to keep focus off the game, and build up an obscene number of ships. I hadnt fought a single person in the beginning of the game so everything I had was from the start.

I did win the match, but let me be clear i hate this style of play. it was fun for a match, but I really hate when people sit in standoffs every game. I won't be doing it again. It just goes to show that any shmoe with enough ships can take down anyone. I'd rather see skillful play than simple muscle.

So as far as strategies go, yes standoffs have their place, but come on! lets have a fun series of games rather than one long standoff game.

With the newly implemented StandoffBot by Trivia21, I hope we can start playing some faster paced games.

I'd like to host this bot on another server, but having only one port for galcon doesnt allow me to host another game on my network.

I'm searching for somebody interesed in running a "SpeedServer" with StandoffBot becouse as you say my server (tomx) is too laggy.

What StandoffBot does:

1. It was implemented without decrypting the code or anything like that.
2. StandoffBot makes an attempt to detect the standoff.
3. After one minute it gives a warning (sg like "30 sec. left") - period can be shorter of course
4. After some more warnings it terminates the game if there isnt enogh move. For that it needs admin rights.

I cant give the bot itself becouse it can make strange things if not handled properly.
AND its not a very good solution. We are waiting for galcon server 2.0 :)

If anyone interested ask here.

Hey trivia, if you want i can host your server in a datacenter...
Only a thing i want to know from phil... how much bandwidth does galcon uses (average)?

you had 23k of ships but wouldn't risk a few thousand to start fights? hehe. You're as much to blame as anyone I'm afraid. It sounds like you need a strategy for being the first one to break the standoff, so here's one of mine for you. I win a lot of games with this one:

1. Just grap a bunch of ships, maybe half, stick em on one planet and then send that fleet at someone (preferably a smaller player) and cause some chaos.

2. There are several things that can then happen.

a) the player you attacked retreats and you get his planets for free. good thing.

b) he fights back hard. Hide a decent amount of ships on crappy out of the way planets and then keep fighting with the remainder and let him start beating you. The chances are that as he's both growing and looking like he's being weakened another player will be forced to join in.

b) someone backstabs you. Pull back your ships from the guy you attacked and also give ground to the backstabber. Again, since the backstabber is now getting bigger he will become a target and other people will attack him anyway. This also leaves you looking very small and weak so people might forget about you for way too long ;)

Sure... this method might cost you lots of ships, but if theres several other players left it really doesnt matter as long as they can still cancel each other out. If you do your fighting earlier (and especially if you end up looking considerably weaker than you are) then its much easier to get other people to do the fighting for you.

yes i realize that. that was the entire point. I was intentionally prolonging the standoff to build solely.

I dont normally ever do it. but I figured i'd give it a shot for a change.

trivia21 - do tell how you managed it :)  (There are a few ways I can think of, but I'm curious.)  If you don't want to post about it here, please e-mail me at my nick @gmail.com :)     I may make multi-player modding easier for you in the future (after we see how the single player goes for a while.)

Prox - From what I've seen Galcon takes around 5k / second in a largish game.  Can be a bit more or less.  In the most intense moments of Galcon with lots of players sending lots of fleets it can go to even more.

That was a hilarious stand-off Eckles.  After all your expostulation, I had no end of fun razzing and tormenting you about your hypocrisy in prolonging such "nincompooperation".  Being the smallest player on the board, I was in a prime position to give you grief without having to feel responsible to mitigate the situation.  You've got to admit it Eckels--sometimes stand-offs can be a riotous good laugh.  Any one of us could have broken it at any time, but we were having way too much fun conversing to make it happen so don't feel too bad about winning by default.  I didn't feel gypped and I doubt whether anyone else did either.

On a side-note, try not to take my teasing too seriously (you were in danger of it last night I think--sorry).  I give a hard time to people I like, and pretty much anything I say in chat can be read as though I were laughing while saying it.  In fact, come to think of it I laugh an awful lot while playing Galcon, and since laughing is probably my all-time favorite activity, it's no wonder I love this game so much. =)

this new bot that after one minute aborts games - is fantastic ! i played eckles  on his server while it was working - and lost a game due to it aborting...though i would of won it.
all i say is yes please for no stand - offs but one minute i think is too short - i was recovering at the time - and i think within another 20 - 30 seconds i would of made another attack.

to sum up - yes i prefer a one minute limit - to none but - for a healthy game id rather 90 seconds. -

to add to prox's idea of booting players who dont move - is a no-go.
if youre seriously hurt/unable to move because of 2 larger forces between you - that shouldnt be a reason to boot you.

yes im all for speeding up uneccesary long games - but dont dictate exactly how galcon should be played........ its fun as it is !

Brilliant so instead of everyone not attacking, only one person attacks! I'm willing to risk the game ending to maintain my plan, you can waste your ships I don't mind. It's not like it's hard to break up a standoff anyway, people are greedy and just plain stupid.

Today, with about 10 people playing,  I measured 200 kbit/sec, or 25 kbyte/sec, average.
