Location: LA | Its very rarely in your interest to defend. It almost always puts you in a worse position.
The cases when you should defend are as follows
1) at the start when *one of your neighbors is distracted* and the other attacks you and you think you can take him.
2) When you are trying to put a weaker player out of the game for good and you'll have enough left to keep battling the other threats
3) There are two players left and you are bigger (and still, this is only sometimes a good idea)
4) To teach someone a lesson. Keep in mind, Of the dozens of times I've done this its been a good idea maybe twice.
5) Scenario: There are three or four players in an all out brawl. You stash a few thousand ships on a far off planet for later use. If someone sends a few hundred up there, its likely because they are just attacking all planets with a few hundred. Defending against those ships will allow you to keep your stash hidden. The other players probably won't even notice the few hundred that died.
6) You want to bluff off an attack. As in you are playing chicken. This is REALLY DANGEOURS and you can only do this against good players who want to win. And you have to make use of /msg to tell them you aren't going anywhere.

But defending individual locations while attacking others can be a good idea as part of a larger war: don't let an enemy get a beachhead in a remote cluster, or in your rear planets.
