I've played a few games recently where a majority player under attack from multiple others will viciously defend every corner of their territory, going from side to side of the screen again and again.

Occasionally it seems they get frustrated and attempt to wipe out one of the offenders, leading to their own quick demise. This isn't quite as detailed as TP's strategy tips, but if involved in a large multi-opponent battle, try to choose an appropriate point to withdraw, leaving the others unsure as to how many ships you have left. Take a small cluster and defend it. Either that, or just let some of your territory go to someone eating it, in the hopes of creating a larger opponent on which to focus the attention.

In any case, in games with more than two others it's hardly ever a good idea to target one player exclusively in an everyone-on-you situation. You'll be weakened and the others who just sat by and watched will quickly eat you up.

It is, I believe, better to have 10 planets and 4,000 ships than 30 planets and 600.
