The situation often arrises in which the board is divided between two players, with a third player kicking around in the corner with almost no hope of success. This third person often does, however, get to decide the winner.
If I'm in this possition, and one of the big contenders is a loudmouth jerk, I will always decide the game in favor of the other person. I don't think I'm alone in this, either. Being insulting does, in fact, affect your score negatively.

Also,  a note to admirals who play in beginner servers. If you want to embarrass yourself by doing that, who's to stop you? All the same, it's rediculous to make rude and insulting remarks to the other players regarding how they play on that server. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY! THAT'S WHY THEY'RE THERE! If you want to play with people who know the game, go to a normal server. Otherwise, don't ruin people's good time.

AMEN BROTHER!!!  I notice that most of the best players are also nice people, rarely stooping to insulting personal remarks about the other players.  I will add to Tim's statement by saying that new players should never be put down for their stupid moves even if they're on a non-noobie server.  Hey, they're trying to learn!  Give them helpful criticism and pointers, not rude insults.  You can suggest they go to a beginner server, but don't treat them badly.  Yes, other players (even great ones) make dumb mistakes and can ruin our game, but that's no reason for anyone to be a jerk.  Saying that a move was stupid is ok--it's just crass comments and personal insults that I think are inappropriate and make the game much less fun for everyone.  It's also very irritating when players with less than a 50% win ratio make critical remarks--it comes across as rude and annoying because they have no room to talk.  Don't call anyone stupid idiot who is a better player than you are!

One of the best times I ever had playing Galcon was when I was at a game where ThirdPary presided.  He was very hard on everyone (including me), but his criticism was actually helpful.  He wouldn't just tell someone they did something stupid and leave it at that.  He told them what they should have done.  Everyone's game improved that night--I know mine did DRAMATICALLY.  Yeah, he got worked up--alot of people got reemed out, yelled at, read the riot act...  But the comments were never personal and there wasn't cursing.  I've had great respect for ThirdParty ever since that night.  He reminded me of some of my favorite horseback riding instructors--hard but helpful, and truly inspiring since he is such a good player.  Thanks ThirdParty!

Tim: I've won too many games from a "hopeless" position to be willing to throw such positions to another player; I'll usually try to preserve the balance of power while slowly increasing my strength.  (Except, occasionally, if I've been reduced to the point where I need a player's active assistance just to survive; then I try to reward him for it.)

But I do agree that politeness is a virtue.  Even if all the players in the game are realpolitikers like me, everyone will have more fun if people are nice to each other.  And in the end, fun matters more than score.

Nanno: heh, I don't remember that night, but it does sound like the kind of thing I'd do.  I'm somewhat more competitive than is good for me; I shouldn't get worked up over a game.  But if I had to lose my cool, I'm glad that I at least lost it in such a way as to be useful and fun for you.  ;-P

Thirdparty: I'm not arguing that if someone's the underdog they should give up and decide the winner. I've come back from those situations, too. I'm aware that the most prominent player in the beginning of a round often (if not usually) turns out the loser. That's a different stratiegical issue. Naturally, if someone's the underdog, they should wait and hope that they get ignored long enough to build a substantial fleet, and wait for the big guys to beat eachother down.
There are times when it just doesn't work out that way. Those are the times I'm referring to.

Politeness is overrated in society. I call you an idiot, that isn't me being rude per say it's me informing you of a fact. The game isn't complicated enough to justify some of the moves I've seen. Why should I baby someone who can't grasp what I view as simplistic? What you may not get is it some cases you want the enemy to attack, having them hate you may help you. As long as you play in your best interest, I don't have a problem, but once you stop doing that I shall call you an idiot.

I find my Galcon persona fluctuates wildly with my mood.

there is a better explanation to the unexplained moves you've seen and it's ain't idiotism.
a lot of times when you take a neutral planet and right away someone fights you for it - there is a lag related "bug" that made the other guy see it - as if he was the first to take the neutral planet without you even getting near it and then you attacking his planet.
