In general, Galcon is a game which tolerates players at different skill levels.  Teams can be set up in a balanced fashion; and in FFA, a player who is somewhat weak hurts mainly himself.  But there are some mistakes which a player can make which will not only cause him to lose, but will also make other players mad at him; mistakes which make the outcome a matter of luck.  Here's a list of advice which will make you more likely to win games and will help keep the game fun for more experienced players.

----- ----- -----

1.  If your teammates are fighting, you should be fighting too.

In a team game, don't "turtle".  If you focus only on taking neutral planets and defending your own territory, your partners will get ganged up on.  For example, in a three vs. three, if everyone starts fighting except you, the other team will first have an easy three vs. two battle, and then an even easier three vs. one when they come for you.

----- ----- -----

2.  In early-game FFA, don't launch suicidal attacks.

In a free-for-all game with many players, there may be a tendency to attack your neighbor (or to take planets that are right next to his, which will eventually lead to a fight).  The inevitable result is that another player will wait quietly while you fight it out, and then swoop in and kill you both.  Attack someone only if you think you can win quickly (e.g. you've got far more ships than he does), your other borders are secure (e.g. all other players are busy fighting each other), or you think you have no choice (e.g. he's going to win unless everyone attacks him).  Also, don't attack someone who doesn't have anything worth taking; if, even with his territory, you'd be helplessly outproduced by the other players, you should look for neutrals to claim instead.

----- ----- -----

3.  In late-game FFA, attack the leader.

Often a situation arises in free-for-all games where one player controls roughly half the planets, while the other half are divided among several players.  It may be tempting to attack the other weaklings, since you have some chance of getting their territory; but if you do, the juggernaut will crush you.  Instead, attack the leading player; if the other small players do likewise, you'll all have a fighting chance at winning.  (There is no second place.  There is only winning or not.)
